A loaf with an ancient question
In 2019 Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley joined researchers sampling ancient Egyptian pottery in Boston-area museum collections. The vessels, about 4,500 years old, had been used for baking and brewing. A noninvasive method recovered yeast without damaging the pots. Blackley took a sample home, cultivated a starter and baked bread using ancient grains. The loaf rose, and he described a sweet, rich aroma. There was a catch: the yeast's age had not been established, and modern contamination was possible. Breakfast from the age of the pyramids was an intriguing possibility, rather than a proven result. Even with that question open, museum pottery had inspired a very unusual loaf.

In Los Banos, Philippines, the International Rice Research Institute guards a quiet treasure: the world's largest collection of rice, more than 130,000 samples in cold storage. Scientists there protect everything from wild species to heirloom varieties farmers have grown for centuries, knowing that a single forgotten seed might one day resist a new disease or a hotter climate. To guard against fire, war, or disaster, duplicates are mailed to a frozen vault deep inside an Arctic mountain in Norway. In 2025 PhilRice, a separate Philippine institute, sent 4,417 rice seed samples north for safekeeping. It is a global insurance policy written entirely in seeds.
