The house shaped like a fruit

Airth, Scotland

Near Airth, Scotland stands one of the country's strangest buildings: a stone summerhouse crowned with a giant carved pineapple, 46 feet tall. The 4th Earl of Dunmore raised the hothouse in 1761 and later added the famous stone fruit, around 1777, when pineapples were so rare and costly that a single one could be rented for a dinner party just for show. Wealthy hosts displayed the fruit as a status symbol rather than eating it, and the estate heated glasshouses to coax real pineapples from the chilly Scottish climate. Today the folly is a holiday let, a quirky monument to an age when fruit signaled wealth.

A fruit gets a new name

Auckland, New Zealand

In June 1959, the Auckland exporter Turners and Growers faced a sales problem. The furry brown fruit they shipped was called the Chinese gooseberry, an awkward name during the Cold War, when American buyers distrusted anything labeled Chinese. Berries and melons also carried high US import taxes, so an early idea, melonette, was scrapped too. The firm settled on kiwifruit, naming the fuzzy fruit after the country's small, brown, flightless national bird. The rebrand worked beyond anyone's hopes. Exports soared, and within a few decades the once-obscure vine fruit filled supermarkets worldwide, its new name now used almost everywhere it grows.
