The clock powered by the weather
In a quiet foyer at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, a small clock built in 1864 has run without anyone ever winding it. A Scottish-born clockmaker named Arthur Beverly built it to run on nothing but the weather. As the air in a sealed box warms and cools by a few degrees each day, it expands and contracts, nudging a weight that keeps the gears turning. It has paused only a handful of times, for reasons including cleaning, mechanical trouble, a move and insufficient temperature changes. More than a century and a half on, the Beverly Clock is still keeping time, a patient reminder that small daily rhythms can carry a thing a very long way.
It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste much of it.

The ten days that vanished
In Rome, Italy, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII fixed a calendar that had quietly slipped out of step with the sun. The old Julian system counted the year slightly too long, and over centuries the seasons had drifted from their dates. The remedy was startling: ten days were simply deleted. In the countries adopting the reform that October, people went to sleep on Thursday, October 4, and woke the next morning to Friday, October 15. Not every country agreed at once, so for years travelers crossing a border could seem to leap forward or back in time. The new calendar held, and it still orders our days today.
