The oldest copy

Cambridge, England

In 1902 a collector named Walter Nash bought a battered scrap of papyrus in Egypt and sent it to Cambridge, England. Scholars there pieced together four fragments and found the Ten Commandments written in faded Hebrew letters. For decades the Nash Papyrus was the oldest known Hebrew biblical manuscript on Earth, dated to roughly 150 years before Christ. Only the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls later pushed it from first place. Curiously, its wording blends the versions found in Exodus and Deuteronomy, and lists the commandments in an order that hints at how ancient worshippers may have recited them aloud. It still rests in a Cambridge library today.

Coventry, England

On the night of November 14, 1940, German bombs gutted the medieval cathedral of Coventry, England, leaving only its outer walls and tower standing. Rather than vow revenge, Provost Richard Howard chose forgiveness, and the words Father Forgive were later carved into the scorched stone behind the broken altar, echoing the sixth and ninth commandments against killing and false accusation. A local priest bound three medieval nails from the fallen roof into a small cross. That Cross of Nails became a worldwide symbol of reconciliation, sent to former enemy cities including Dresden. Each year the cathedral still prays the same two words over its open-air ruins.
