The library with hidden writing
At the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt sits Saint Catherine's Monastery, home to an ancient manuscript library. The monastery dates to the sixth century. Its monks guard thousands of handwritten manuscripts behind fortress walls in the desert. Among its treasures was the Codex Sinaiticus, one of the earliest near-complete copies of the Christian Bible, written by hand around the year 350. In recent years scholars have used special photography to reveal faded writing hidden under newer ink, recovering lost languages and texts that monks had quietly preserved for fifteen centuries.

The shepherd and the scrolls
In 1947, according to the familiar discovery account, a young Bedouin shepherd near Qumran, by the Dead Sea, threw a stone into a cave while looking for a lost goat. Instead of a bleat he heard pottery shatter. Inside the cave he found clay jars holding ancient scrolls wrapped in linen. They turned out to be the Dead Sea Scrolls, some of the oldest surviving manuscripts of Hebrew scripture, hidden away roughly two thousand years earlier. One nearly complete scroll of the book of Isaiah allowed scholars to compare an ancient version with later copies, finding both continuity and differences. The chance find became one of the greatest discoveries of the last hundred years.
