The library that never closed

Mount Sinai, Egypt

At the foot of Mount Sinai in Egypt sits Saint Catherine's Monastery, home to the oldest continuously running library on Earth. Monks have kept it open since the sixth century, guarding thousands of handwritten manuscripts behind fortress walls in the desert. Among its treasures was the Codex Sinaiticus, one of the earliest near-complete copies of the Christian Bible, written by hand around the year 350. Today the monastery's collection of ancient texts is second only to the Vatican's. In recent years scholars have used special photography to reveal faded writing hidden under newer ink, recovering lost languages and texts that monks had quietly preserved for fifteen centuries.

The shepherd and the scrolls

Qumran, West Bank

In 1947, a young Bedouin shepherd near the cliffs of Qumran, by the Dead Sea, threw a stone into a cave while looking for a lost goat. Instead of a bleat he heard pottery shatter. Inside the cave he found clay jars holding ancient scrolls wrapped in linen. They turned out to be the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest known copies of Hebrew scripture, hidden away roughly two thousand years earlier. One nearly complete scroll of the book of Isaiah matched the text people had been reading for centuries, with remarkably few changes. The chance find became one of the greatest discoveries of the last hundred years.
