Chained to a soldier
Tradition places Ephesians during Paul's imprisonment, often associated with his house arrest in Rome. Acts describes him living under guard and speaking of his chain. That setting offers a vivid way to picture the letter's armor imagery: a belt, breastplate, shield, helmet and sword turning familiar equipment into images of faith and endurance. A nearby soldier may have helped inspire the comparison, but that scene is an interpretation, not something the passage narrates. Ephesians' authorship and precise setting are also debated by scholars. The memorable image remains: standing firm, dressed for a struggle described as spiritual rather than a fight against human enemies.

Around 1527, in Wittenberg, Germany, Martin Luther wrote a hymn that would become known as the battle song of the Reformation. He drew its opening from Psalm 46, picturing God as a mighty fortress, and filled the verses with images of spiritual struggle and a word that defeats the enemy. Sung in homes and churches across Europe, the hymn carried its fortress image far beyond scholars and into ordinary voices. Heinrich Heine later called it the Marseillaise of the Reformation. Centuries on, congregations of many languages still sing Luther's defiant verses about standing firm.
