A Bible reunited on screen
At Saint Catherine's Monastery near Mount Sinai, Egypt, a young German scholar named Constantin von Tischendorf made one of the great finds in Bible history. In 1844 he noticed ancient parchment leaves and, by his account, recognized pages of an extremely old Greek Bible. Returning in 1859, he was shown the rest of the manuscript. Now called Codex Sinaiticus and dated to the mid-fourth century, it is the oldest surviving copy of the complete New Testament, handwritten roughly sixteen centuries ago. Once scattered across libraries in several countries, its pages were digitally reunited online in 2009 so anyone can read this remarkable witness to the early text.

The girl who walked for a Bible
In 1800, a Welsh teenager named Mary Jones set out for the town of Bala, Wales, walking about twenty-six miles barefoot over rough country. She had saved coins for six years to buy a Welsh Bible of her own, having learned to read so she could one day own one. The minister Thomas Charles, moved by her determination, found her a copy. Her story stirred Charles to ask why Bibles were so scarce, and in 1804 it helped inspire the founding of the British and Foreign Bible Society, which went on to print Scripture in hundreds of languages around the world.
