Silverton, Oregon

In 1923, a family from Silverton, Oregon took their collie mix, Bobbie, on a road trip to Indiana. At a fuel stop he was chased off by other dogs and vanished. Heartbroken, the family searched, advertised, and finally drove home without him. Six months later, a scrawny, footsore dog limped up to them on a Silverton street. It was Bobbie. He had crossed roughly 2,500 miles of plains, rivers, and winter mountains to find his way back, his nails worn to nothing. His story filled newspapers, and people who had sheltered him along the route wrote in. Bobbie had navigated half a continent home on loyalty alone.

The cat who kept watch

Providence, Rhode Island

At a nursing home in Providence, Rhode Island, staff noticed something tender about a resident cat named Oscar. Shy with most people, he would now and then settle beside one particular patient and stay close for hours. Again and again, the residents he chose were in their final hours of life. A doctor described the pattern in a 2007 medical journal essay that drew worldwide attention. Nurses came to see Oscar's quiet visits as a gentle signal to call families in.
