The dog who walked home
In 1923 a family from Silverton, Oregon, took their Scotch collie mix, Bobbie, on a road trip to Indiana. He vanished there, and his owners eventually had to go home without him. Six months later, a thin, footsore dog appeared at their Silverton doorstep. It was Bobbie. His return filled newspapers, and letters arrived from people who said they had sheltered him along the way. The Oregon Humane Society reconstructed a journey of about 2,800 miles, though nobody could follow every step. How he found home remains the mystery. The worn feet and the familiar doorstep tell the part that needs no explanation: the missing dog was back.

The cat who kept watch
At a nursing home in Providence, Rhode Island, staff noticed an unusual pattern involving a resident cat named Oscar. Usually aloof, he sometimes settled beside a patient who would die soon afterward. Physician David Dosa described those observations in a 2007 medical journal essay that drew worldwide attention. Staff came to treat Oscar's visits as a reason to alert relatives, and some families welcomed his quiet company at the bedside. The account was a doctor's observation, not proof that a cat could diagnose approaching death. Oscar lived to about seventeen, dying in 2022. His story endures as much for the comfort of a small presence as for the unanswered question.
Sympathy beyond the confines of man, that is, humanity to the lower animals, seems to be one of the latest moral acquisitions.
