Off the coast of Monterey, California, scientists exploring a deep undersea mountain found the largest gathering of octopuses ever seen. More than 20,000 pearl octopuses nest at the site, nicknamed the Octopus Garden, nearly two miles below the surface. The mothers cluster around cracks where warm water seeps from the rock. Researchers discovered that the heat speeds up the eggs, helping the young hatch in under two years instead of many more. After laying, each mother stops eating and guards her eggs until they hatch. The find shows how much of the deep sea remains unexplored, still full of surprises waiting in the dark.

Sea of Cortez, Mexico

In the Sea of Cortez, off the coast of Mexico, a small boat of whale watchers came upon a young humpback tangled in a fishing net, floating still and barely able to breathe. For more than an hour, the group worked carefully with a knife, cutting away the heavy mesh wrapped around its body and tail. Just as they freed the last of the net, the whale came alive, swimming off and then leaping from the water again and again, slapping its fins as if in thanks.
