A pigeon with a disputed legend
A small pigeon in the Smithsonian carries a large wartime story. Cher Ami served with American forces in France in 1918 and survived wounds to the breast and leg while delivering a message. The familiar account credits him with stopping friendly fire on the Lost Battalion in the Argonne Forest, where 194 men survived. Historians have questioned whether the surviving military records conclusively connect this particular bird with that famous message. The wounds and service are real; some details of the heroic narrative are less secure. Even with that distinction, the mounted pigeon is a striking reminder of how much soldiers once depended on a bird finding its way home.

The crows that brought gifts
In Seattle, Washington, a young girl named Gabi began sharing her snacks with the crows in her yard, then started leaving them peanuts every day. Over time the birds came to know her, waiting on the fence when she stepped outside. Then the gifts began. The crows brought back small treasures and lined them up on the feeder tray: beads, buttons, a tiny screw, a polished bit of glass, and an earring. Her mother also reported that a crow returned a lost camera lens cap to the birdbath, a delivery caught on camera. Research shows crows can distinguish familiar human faces, though the birds' motives for bringing objects are harder to know. For Gabi, each shiny scrap could look like a thank-you note left by a feathered friend.
