The man who grew a forest
On the sandbars of Majuli, an island in India's Brahmaputra River, a teenager named Jadav Payeng found dead snakes washed up on bare, baking soil with no shade. In 1979 he began planting trees on the river island. He continued tending the growing forest for decades. Today his work, known as the Molai forest, covers hundreds of acres and shelters deer, rhinos, elephants, and even tigers. India honored him with one of its highest civilian awards. The story gives an unusually large shape to a small act: plant a tree, then keep caring for what grows.

Life without sunlight
Near the town of Mangalia, Romania, workers testing ground for a power plant in 1986 broke into a cave with an ecosystem isolated from surface influences for millions of years. The air inside is poisonous to us, thick with hydrogen sulfide and much less oxygen than ordinary air. Yet Movile Cave teems with life: dozens of pale, eyeless creatures, many found nowhere else on Earth. With no sunlight, the whole food web runs on bacteria that draw energy from the cave's toxic gases instead of light. Scientists study it as a glimpse of how life might survive on other worlds, living in the dark.
