Pandas raised in disguise
At a reserve in Sichuan, China, keepers preparing panda cubs for release into the wild dress in baggy panda costumes, sometimes dabbed with panda scent. The furry disguise is meant to keep the young bears from becoming too dependent on people. Cubs train alongside their mothers, learning to find food and cope with life beyond the enclosure, while keepers monitor their progress. Tao Tao spent more than two years in this unusual school before his release. The costume is only one part of a careful process, but it makes a memorable picture: people pretending to be pandas so that real pandas can learn to stand on their own.

The lion who remembered
In 1969 two young Australians bought a lion cub from Harrods in London and raised him at their furniture shop, naming him Christian. As he grew too big for city life, a stay at a Surrey sanctuary helped put him on the path to Kenya, where conservationist George Adamson taught him to live wild. When his former owners returned to Kora nearly a year later, Christian greeted them with an embrace, his paws around their shoulders. The reunion was filmed in 1971 and later watched online by millions. The big cat's affectionate welcome remains the heart of the story, a meeting across the distance between a London shop and the Kenyan bush.
