The gangsta gardener

In South Central Los Angeles, Ron Finley grew tired of a neighborhood with fast food on every corner and almost no fresh produce. So he dug up the strip of dirt between the sidewalk and the curb outside his home and planted vegetables. The city cited him, saying the patch blocked the right of way, and even issued a warrant. Finley refused to give up. He started a petition that drew thousands of signatures, and the city backed down. A tree older than farming

Fulufjallet, Sweden

High on a windswept Swedish mountainside grows a thin, scruffy spruce that looks like nothing special. Yet scientists studying its roots made an astonishing discovery. While each visible trunk lives only a few centuries, the root system underneath has been alive for roughly 9,560 years, regrowing fresh trunks again and again across the ages.
