The gangsta gardener
In South Central Los Angeles, Ron Finley grew tired of a neighborhood with fast food on every corner and almost no fresh produce. So he dug up the strip of dirt between the sidewalk and the curb outside his home and planted vegetables. The city cited him, saying the patch blocked the right of way, and even issued a warrant. Finley refused to give up. A petition organized in support of the garden drew about 900 signatures, and the city backed down. He went on to teach neighbors to plant their own food and to share his story with the world. His message was simple: growing a garden can be a quiet act of change.
To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.

A tree with ancient roots
High on a windswept Swedish mountainside grows a thin, scruffy spruce that looks like nothing special. Yet scientists studying its roots made an astonishing discovery. While each visible trunk lives only a few centuries, buried remains beneath it indicate a clonal history stretching back roughly 9,550 years, regrowing fresh trunks again and again across the ages. Nicknamed Old Tjikko, it took root not long after the last ice age, long before farming reached many parts of northern Europe. Radiocarbon dating of buried plant material revealed that long history, hidden for thousands of years. The little tree is a living reminder that the quietest garden plants can outlast entire civilizations.
