The sled dogs that saved a town

Nome, Alaska

In January 1925, diphtheria broke out in the icebound gold rush town of Nome, Alaska, and the only serum that could stop it sat nearly 700 miles away in Nenana. Twenty mushers and around 150 sled dogs carried the antitoxin across the territory in relay, covering 674 miles in five and a half days through subzero blizzards and hurricane-force winds. Leonhard Seppala and his lead dog Togo took the longest and most dangerous stretch, crossing the shifting ice of Norton Sound, while Gunnar Kaasen's dog Balto led the final leg into town. Balto's bronze statue still stands in New York's Central Park, honoring every dog in the relay.

Buddy shows America what a guide dog can do

Nashville, Tennessee

Morris Frank, a young blind man from Nashville, Tennessee, learned of a 1927 Saturday Evening Post article describing dogs in Switzerland trained to guide blinded war veterans. He wrote to its author, Dorothy Harrison Eustis, saying he would go anywhere to get his independence back. In 1928 he traveled to her Swiss school and returned with Buddy, a German shepherd, then proved her skills to New York reporters by crossing a chaotic waterfront street unharmed. The next year, Frank and Eustis founded The Seeing Eye, the first guide dog school in the United States. By 1956, every state in the union had passed laws welcoming guide dogs in public places.
