Letters to Juliet
In Verona, Italy, the city associated with Shakespeare's Juliet, love letters arrive from people who are heartbroken, hopeful or unsure what to do. Volunteers at the Juliet Club read them and write replies in Juliet's name. The club reports receiving about 50,000 letters a year, with volunteer secretaries from around the world. The tradition reaches back to the 1930s, when a caretaker at Juliet's tomb began answering notes left there. The character is fictional, but the people looking for a sympathetic ear are real. So are the volunteers who take time to put an answer into words, giving an old love story a very present-day correspondence.

A poem from the Tower
In London, England, an early surviving Valentine poem was written by a prisoner. Charles, Duke of Orleans, was captured at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and held captive in England for nearly twenty-five years. Far from his wife in France, he filled his long captivity by writing poems, including a tender verse that calls her "my very gentle Valentine." The handwritten manuscript still rests in the British Library, more than six hundred years old. The poem preserves a voice from a long captivity, making the distance between two people feel closer than its six centuries might suggest.
