A three-story Easter egg

Vegreville, Alberta

In the small town of Vegreville, Alberta, stands an Easter egg taller than a house. Built in 1975, the giant pysanka honors the Ukrainian settlers who farmed the region and decorated real eggs each spring in their traditional folk style. It stands about 31 feet tall and weighs roughly 2.5 tons, its surface tiled with hundreds of bronze, silver, and gold triangles that catch the light. The design was such a puzzle that a computer scientist at the University of Utah helped work out how the thousands of pieces could fit a true egg shape. It can even turn in the wind like a weathervane, a quiet tribute to a heritage of patience and care.

The lawn the children won

For years children rolled Easter eggs down the grassy slopes near the United States Capitol, until lawmakers, annoyed at the trampled turf, passed a law in the 1870s shooing them away. The youngsters were heartbroken. In 1878 President Rutherford Hayes heard of their plight and threw open the South Lawn of the White House instead, inviting families to roll their eggs there on Easter Monday. The gathering became a yearly tradition that still draws thousands today, and for generations it was one of the few public events in the city that was never segregated. A small act of welcome turned a closed door into an open lawn.
