under

Learners often confuse under and below: under usually means covered or directly beneath, while below just means lower, not always touching.

over

Over works as preposition, adverb, and prefix; as a prefix it can mean too much, as in overdo or oversleep.

above

Above answers where but not motion: you say jump over the wall, not jump above it, because above rarely shows a path.

below

Below comes from be plus low, and unlike under it almost never takes a moving object passing across or beneath something.

behind

Behind built from be plus hind, the old word for rear; the same hind survives in hindsight and hind legs.

beside

Beside means next to, but beside yourself means upset, and the lookalike phrase besides means in addition, a common learner trap.

Across hides the word cross: it began as on cross, meaning in a crossed position, before shrinking into one tidy word.

against

Against picked up a final t that was never original; the same stray t stuck to amongst and amidst too.

toward

Toward and towards mean the same thing; Americans tend to drop the s, while British writers usually keep it on.

before

Before can mark place, time, or rank, and it built from be plus fore, the same fore in forehead and forecast.
