Paint the city you want to see

In 2009 New York's transport chief Janette Sadik-Khan tried a daring experiment in Times Square. Rather than spend years and millions on a grand redesign, her team simply closed the road to cars one morning using paint, orange barrels, and 376 cheap lawn chairs from a hardware store. People poured into the new space to sit, eat, and rest. The city evaluated pedestrian safety and traffic before making the plazas permanent. The temporary plaza was later rebuilt in durable materials. Her lesson spread to cities worldwide: try a change quickly and cheaply, watch how people use it, then build it properly.

A library with hidden pages

High in the desert mountains of Egypt's Sinai, the monks of St Catherine's Monastery guard an ancient collection of manuscripts. It holds thousands of handwritten books and scrolls, including some of the oldest Christian texts known. For generations the monks copied, mended, and protected pages by hand. Recently scholars used special cameras to read faded writing hidden beneath later text, recovering lost languages and forgotten works thought gone forever. After a long renovation, part of the collection opened to ordinary visitors , a quiet city of words still living in the sand.
