A borrowed hand
In Lyon, France, in September 1998, surgeons transplanted a donor hand onto Clint Hallam, who had lost his own in an accident. An earlier transplant attempt in Ecuador in 1964 had failed, but this operation marked a new chapter. Over more than thirteen hours, the team fixed bones together, then joined vessels, tendons and nerves. Hallam later gained movement and fingertip sensation. The outcome did not last: after rejection, the hand was removed at his request in 2001. Still, the operation showed what the surgery could achieve and helped advance a field in which restoring a hand means reconnecting both its machinery and its sense of touch.

Hands printed by strangers
It began with a puppet. In Bellingham, Washington, prop maker Ivan Owen had built a giant mechanical hand for a costume, then filmed it. A carpenter in South Africa who had lost his fingers saw the video and asked for help. Together, working across continents, they designed a simple gripping hand a child could wear. Instead of selling it, the collaborators shared their designs openly. Volunteers with home 3D printers began making colorful hands for children born without fingers, with materials commonly costing about $20 to $50. The group, later called e-NABLE, grew to thousands of makers who have delivered hands to kids in dozens of countries.
