A king's fairy-tale castle
High in the Bavarian Alps near Schwangau, Germany, stands Neuschwanstein, perhaps the most fairy-tale castle on Earth. King Ludwig II began building it in 1869 on a craggy ridge, dreaming of a medieval fantasy world drawn from old German legends. He poured his fortune into soaring towers, painted halls, and an artificial cave, fitting it with then-modern wonders like running water and a telephone. Ludwig died in 1886 before the castle was finished, after living there for only a short time. Today more than a million visitors climb the hill each year. A private royal fantasy became a place visited by people from around the world.

The tales that kept changing
In the German city of Kassel, two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, spent years listening to neighbors, friends, and storytellers recount tales passed down by word of mouth. Drawing on oral accounts and earlier written versions, in 1812 they published a first collection of 86 of them. Early editions were grim indeed, full of dark punishments, and the brothers revised the stories through later printings, sometimes changing or intensifying their violence. Their editions helped make Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and dozens more familiar around the world. Two scholars who set out simply to preserve old folklore ended up shaping how the whole world tells fairy tales today.
